The Government of South Australia is currently reviewing the future of the Coongie Lakes Control Zone (CLCZ), and the options relating to petroleum operations which may, or may not, be undertaken in the area. This options paper summarises, for the Coongie Lakes area, a variety of information on environmental significance, the significance of petroleum resources, past petroleum activities, and techniques, and discusses options for the future of petroleum operations. It aims to assist in the public consultation phase, regarding submission of issues and management options, by promoting public discussion. Although there are many permutations for the future of petroleum activities in the area, the four broad options discussed in this options paper are: 1. A Control Zone using the existing CLCZ boundary which would allow for petroleum activities with revision of existing conditions and a revised administration structure; 2. An Exclusion Zone (no petroleum activity) which is either based on the current CLCZ boundary or on a new boundary; 3. An Exclusion zone (to be defined), with a control/buffer zone (to be defined) in which petroleum activities could occur with revised conditions and a revised administrative structure; 4. An Activity Assessment Option, with no zone definitions, which continues to allow for petroleum activities, using the Petroleum Act 1999 processes and requirements to ensure adequate protection of environmental values. Based on the outcomes of public consultation on these options, a management plan may be prepared to define, and, where permitted, manage petroleum activities in the Coongie Lakes area. A draft of any such plan would be made available for public comment in a second public consultation phase.
