Aerial photography, satellite imagery, geological maps and on-ground geological and geophysical (transient electromagnetic) investigations were used in early 1998 to select drilling sites for additional water wells to supply Indulkana township in the far north of South Australia. In April and June, 1998, seventeen wells were drilled within a thirty-kilometre radius of Indulkana. Only two of the wells produced barely acceptable yields of potable groundwater, while several others produced either very small yields of acceptable quality or larger yields of unacceptably saline groundwater. Three wells having moderate yields (0.4, 1.4 and 1.5 L/sec. sustainable for one year) of groundwater of sufficient quality (1360 to 1920 mg/L) to provide feed water for a desalination unit were developed for production. These wells were on the Indulkana Range and had the advantage of being within a very few kilometres of existing pipelines.
