The salinity of the groundwater accessed by certain water wells which are completed in the shallowest Tertiary confined aquifer T1 in the Waterloo Corner area has risen significantly since irrigation commenced there. Recently, observation well drilling and constant rate discharge testing of the T1 aquifer was carried out at a site where the salinity of the groundwater encountered in a new production well was very abnormally high. The investigation has indicated that there is no substantial clay bed separating the T1 and deepest Quaternary Q4 aquifers at the site, and that the local high salinity of the T1 groundwater is due to contamination from as yet undetermined sources (but probably from the known more saline groundwaters of the overlying Quaternary Q1, Q2, or Q3 aquifers), probably via a well that now has corroded casing. This supposition was confirmed by the observed decline in salinity of the T1 groundwater obtained during three days of pumping from this aquifer at the site.
