The Kangaroo Flat area lies immediately to the north of the Northern Adelaide Plains Prescribed Well Area (NAPPWA). Most of the local groundwater extraction takes place from the confined Tertiary T2 aquifer. Newly constructed water wells in the Kangaroo Flat area that lie outside of the NAPPWA show an average T2 groundwater salinity of 1200 mg/L. In general, the groundwater salinity increases significantly toward the north and north-west, reaching 2500 mg/L. An increase in groundwater usage in the Kangaroo Flat area was first noted in 1997, when the local press reported the drilling of one super [yielding] bore on section 720 Hundred of Mudla Wirra. This event was brought to the attention of the North Para Water Resources Committee and the State Government's Department of Heritage, Environment and Aboriginal Affairs in October 1997. Since then, several other water wells have been constructed just to the north of the NAPPWA, and these are all producing large supplies of low salinity water. Based on records of drilling activity that occurred between 1996-1999, and the number of applications for new water well construction permits now being processed for the Kangaroo Flat area, there is currently some concern that the groundwater resources of this area may be being, or may soon become, over-developed. Indeed, the standing groundwater levels in wells in the area have reportedly already declined by 4 metres during 1998/99. This report accordingly assesses the potential impact of the proposed further development on the groundwater resources in the Kangaroo Flat area and the adjoining NAPPWA.
