It has been estimated that an inferred resource of about 40,000 t of sand may be realised by quarrying from the area covered by Mineral Claim 3742 (now Extractive Mineral Lease 6269), located about 18 km north-northwest of Tintinara. The sand, belonging to the Pleistocene Bridgewater Formation, occurs in a low dune. Sand sizing analyses completed by PIRSA have determined that the grain size distributions within most of the sand samples tested meet the broad requirement for concrete sand as set out in Australian Standard (AS 2758.1998) for fine aggregate, but are too fine to meet other more stringent concrete sand standards. However, the sand quality is quite satisfactory for use in general purpose mortar, packing and garden/filling applications. The continuing lack of identified resources of coarse concrete sand in the upper South-East area highlights the importance of the sand resources located within the Comaum Forest Reserve, 20 km north of Penola, as the only major source of construction sand within the South-East region.
