Zircon crystals found in eleven samples of granitic to gneissic rocks collected from the FOWLER 1:250 000 mapsheet area have been analysed via uranium-lead radiometric dating methods, using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) equipment. Many of the zircons dated in this study suffer both from discordance due to lead loss and from artificially elevated 207Pb/206Pb ages due to the presence of nonradiogenic lead. Consequently, from the LA-ICPMS data we obtained, only the most concordant analyses with lowest 204Pb values are considered to be reliable estimates of the timing of zircon (and host rock) crystallisation. These concordant to near - concordant data indicate that there are two granite formation ages represented within the collection of samples analysed. Samples 1834098, 1834099 and 1834109 all have weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb ages of c. 1620 Ma, and are therefore considered to be part of the St Peter Suite. The remaining eight granite samples analysed have ages that range from c. 1600–1580 Ma, and are therefore part of the Hiltaba Suite. The rock ages obtained in this study are consistent with the relative time-of-emplacement relationships between granitic bodies on the FOWLER mapsheet area which have previously been interpreted from total magnetic intensity images of the region, and support the idea that the interior part of this area is largely composed of deformed St Peter Suite granites that are intruded by slightly younger, but mostly undeformed Hiltaba Suite granites.
