The primary aim of the U-Pb geochronology work reported herein was to constrain the age of granites that form the principal host unit to the minor mineralisation and extensive alteration present within the Chianti Cu-Au prospect located in the eastern Gawler Craton. A sample of the pre-Pandurra Formation sedimentary unit that is present within one prospect drillhole was also examined, to see if there could be a relationship between these sediments and those recently described from the Olympic Dam deposit (McPhie et al., 2011). A particular difficulty experienced with this geochronology study was the highly metamict and altered nature of many of the zircon crystals separated from the rock samples. In particular, the zircons separated from the sedimentary rock sample were of very poor quality, which meant that the amount and quality of the U-Pb radiometric dating data obtained from them was limited. Therefore the data presented here from a number of the samples should be regarded as reconnaissance in nature. Further work with different samples may be required to fully characterize the geochronology of this prospect.
