This report presents the results of SHRIMP U-Pb zircon geochronology from the southern Gawler Craton that has been acquired with the view to improving our understanding of some key stratigraphic units of this region. Eight samples taken from outcrops of seven such stratigraphic units were analysed during October 2011 to obtain interpreted geochronological ages, using the SHRIMP IIe facilities located at Geoscience Australia in Canberra. Many of the units dated within this study have been described previously, particularly within Bulletin 54 of the Geological Survey of South Australia, in particular, the Archaean chapter authored by Daly and Fanning (1993) and the Palaeoproterozoic chapter by Parker et al. (1993). These past publications presented either preliminary U-Pb zircon dating results, or described the geology with respect to Rb-Sr dating methods available at the time. However, until now the southern Eyre Peninsula region has lacked a rock dating study that uses detailed SHRIMP geochronological methods, with which to place the ages of local stratigraphic units into context with the growing new body of southern Gawler Craton geochronological data collected by the Geological Survey in the past several years. Therefore, the present authors have applied SHRIMP geochronology to many of these units, some for the first time, in order to improve the resolution of the different tectono-magmatic events present in this region.
