The laser ablation - inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) U-Pb zircon geochronology data reported herein derive from three rock samples sourced from the central - northern Gawler Craton, South Australia. These samples have been studed for the purpose of reconnaissance investigation of the geology of these localities. This is a technical report describing the samples analysed and the analytical results, and provides a brief discussion of their geochronological interpretation. The results presented here from two of the samples (1039421 and 650666) are not particularly robust, largely as a result of poor quality of the zircons recovered. Nevertheless, the data is reported as a record of the analytical work completed on the samples, and in order to suggest sampling sites for future work to investigate the basement to the northern Gawler Craton. A summary of the zircon ages obtained in this study is presented in table format. The three samples investigated are summarised as follows: Sample 1039421 is a gneissic tonalite from outcrop in the Mount Woods Domain. This sample was collected as part of a mapping program completed in 2007, now incorporated into the BILLA KALINA mapsheet (Chalmers, 2007). The radiometric age data suggest that this sample may be earliest Paleoproterozoic in age, possibly equivalent to the Mulgathing Complex of the central Gawler Craton. If this is the case, this sample could represent one of only three samples that may be the Neoarchean to earliest Paleoproterozoic basement to the Paleoproterozoic (c. 1780–1740 Ma) metasedimentary sequences of the northern Gawler Craton. The other two samples derive from DDH GOMA 4 (Jagodzinski and Reid, 2010) and drill hole AM/PB 2 (Fraser et al., 2012) from the Mabel Creek Ridge within the Nawa Domain. Further work is definitely warranted at the site from which sample 1039421 is derived. Sample 650666 is a gneissic rock from drillhole Wallira 1, located within the Christie Domain to the south of the Coober Pedy Ridge. This gneissic rock was analysed in order to investigate whether this rock is part of the Mulgathing Complex or not. The zircons analysed are all >2500 Ma in age and show a range of ages up to c. 3230 Ma, suggesting that this is an Archean metasedimentary rock and does belong within the Mulgathing Complex. The third sample, 1676317, is from drill hole DDH HK4 from the Hawks Nest iron ore prospect. This sample is of a coarse conglomerate that unconformably overlies the iron formations at the Hawks Nest deposit, and was taken in order to investigate the provenance of this conglomerate and its relationship to the underlying iron formations. The data suggests that the rock was deposited after c. 1710 Ma, and may therefore be part of the Labyrinth Formation. Notably, this sample contains an abundance of c. 3150 Ma detrital zircon. This may indicate that the Mesoarchean basement to the Gawler Craton, known only in outcrop from the eastern Gawler Craton in the region around Port Augusta (Fraser et al., 2010; McAvaney, 2012), may also occur in the region around Hawks Nest, given the immature nature of the conglomerate sampled therein. Further work in this region may reveal the presence of this older basement in the central Gawler Craton region.
