Black Hill, located 85 km to the east of Adelaide, is an important source of black "granite". The gabbro and norite exposed on the hill over an area of 4 km by 3 km represent the outcropping top of a much larger Cambro - Ordovician gabbroic intrusion. Seven dimension stone quarries and one local council rubble quarry have been established on the outcrop, and three of these quarries are still in operation. Total production of dimension stone from Black Hill from 1947 to 1992 is 132 000 tonnes, representing 78% of the State's granite production. Reserves are sufficient to last for many decades.
