This report contains the excursion guide for the field trip which was held as part of the Chief Government Geologists' Meeting convened in South Australia on 23rd and 24th March 2015. The focus of the field trip was to see rocks of the Gawler Range Volcanics (GRV; 1590–1586 Ma) and Hiltaba Suite (~1590–1575 Ma), which form a sequence of dominantly A-type felsic lavas and granitoids that originally was contiguous with the Benagerie Volcanic Suite (~1586 Ma) and Ninnerie Supersuite (1600–1570 Ma) in the Curnamona Province; together, these units are the known remnants of a Silicic Large Igneous Province (SLIP). This excursion guide gives the itinerary and progressively describes a number of localities within the Gawler Ranges where the rock exposures demonstrate various characteristics of the intrusive and volcanic facies of the Hiltaba Suite and Gawler Range Volcanics, as well as a site visit to Investigator Resources’ Paris Project, where Ag-Pb mineralisation is hosted within a volcanic breccia of the Gawler Range Volcanics, and the St Peter Suite (~1620–1610 Ma) at Point Brown, which has been genetically linked to the genesis of the ~1590 Ma SLIP. It also describes two localities having rock exposures that demonstrate important geological features of the basement to the GRV, developed across a major tectonostratigraphic boundary on Eyre Peninsula, which may form controls on ~1590 Ma metallogenesis.
