This compilation of written and associated oral papers that were presented for the “What lies beneath the western Gawler Craton? 13GA-EG1E Seismic and Magnetotelluric Workshop 2015” is an important step in building our geological understanding of one of the greatest geological frontiers on the Australian continent. Little is yet known about the bedrock geology underlying the Nullarbor Plain and its eastern margins, largely because deep drill hole sections and samples are sparse across the region, but also because, in parts such as the far west of South Australia, the regional geophysical coverage has only been derived to date from early-run programmes having widely spaced points of data acquisition. However, the likely wealth of geological knowledge to be gained from this region is vital not only for better understanding the geological evolution of South Australia, but to inform a large part of the conceptual geological reconstruction of the Australian continent. This publication marks some of the first steps in addressing this lack of data and knowledge, and it thereby provides critical foundations for obtaining new scientific insights and understanding of our country.
