The Geological Survey of South Australia (GSSA) is constantly striving for new and innovative ways to collect and present pre-competitive geoscience data to our stakeholders. One of the traditional, and vital, roles of the GSSA is to conduct field mapping to produce new and refined geological maps of South Australia. With the availability of high performance, field portable ‘tough’ tablet PCs, the GSSA has developed a completely digital field data capture system. Using Motion™ field tablets we are capturing field mapping data using ArcMap and field observations using a custom built Microsoft™ Access database: SA_Geodata_Field_Kit (Field Kit). The data captured with Field Kit is uploaded directly to SA Geodata, the department’s primary geoscientific data repository for exploration data derived from industry reporting requirements and government exploration programs, and is available through the SARIG web portal (https://sarig.pir.sa.gov.au/Map). In order to ensure correct usage of terms and uniformity of rock descriptions, it was decided to apply a set of validated lithology modifier terms to enhance the validated lithology code, thereby providing an extended description of all observed lithologies. A number of ‘modifier working groups’ were established, consisting of field geologists from the GSSA Regional Mapping Team. These working groups were set up based on the relevant expertise of each of the geologists involved, to try to draw together all of the terminology needed to fully describe Sedimentary, Igneous, Metamorphic, Regolith and Landform classed rock material subjects. Each working group was tasked with determining the essential modifier types (i.e. grain size, texture, etc.) required for describing each rock material, as well as the list of additional modifier terms that might be applied to any particular one. The subject glossary provides the preferred meaning of the lithology modifiers, as used by GSSA geologists. These terms have been compiled from a number of sources including geological glossaries, dictionaries and web sources. In some cases these have been modified or, where no previous clear description existed, created by the GSSA modifier working groups to suit usage for South Australian geology and by GSSA geologists. In addition to adding validated lithology modifiers to existing lithologies, a number of new lithologies have been added to the GSSA’s database. They includes new metamorphic rock types, vein and breccia types, and a comprehensive list of new regolith lithologies. An important part of regolith mapping includes recording landscape features, so a comprehensive list of landforms and their meanings is also included. These validated lithology modifier descriptions are valid for all field observations collected after the 1st of June 2013, and do not apply to observations collected prior to this. This glossary will be updated as required.
