Between July 2015 and April 2016, the Geological Survey of South Australia, in collaboration with the Deep Exploration Technologies Cooperative Research Centre (DET CRC), Minotaur Exploration Limited and Kingston Resources Limited, carried out a Mineral Systems Drilling Program (MSDP) diamond drilling campaign along the southern margin of the Gawler Ranges. Working in concert with this drilling campaign, a detailed geological mapping program was carried out at each of the three drilling target areas, namely, Six Mile Hill, Peltabinna and Mount Double, in order to provide a regional geological context into which the stratigraphy and potentially the alteration and mineralisation of the drillholes can be interpreted. This geological mapping program comprised detailed basement, structural and regolith mapping, as well as petrological, whole rock geochemical, isotopic and geochronological studies, with a particular focus on the stratigraphy of the lower Gawler Range Volcanics. During the mapping program, samples of outcropping rocks were collected for future studies of their petrology, geochemistry and geochronology, which samples also included hand specimens intended for comparison with the lithologies encountered in drill cores recovered from the MSDP drillholes. This report comprises a photographic catalogue of nearly 100 selected rock sample hand specimens collected during the geological mapping program. These were displayed during the MSDP Open Day held on 11 August 2016, and are intended to be displayed during Discovery Day on 1 December 2016, both of which events are hosted by the Geological Survey of South Australia (GSSA) and the Department of State Development (DSD). The majority of the rock samples have been cross-referenced to detailed geological mapping which the authors of this report conducted in each of the three MSDP drilling areas located along the southern margin of the Gawler Range Volcanic Province: these newly mapped areas lie within the Six Mile Hill, Peltabinna and Mount Double 1:75,000 scale special geological map sheet extents. A few of the rock samples were obtained from adjacent map sheet areas.
