Notes: The Department of the Premier and Cabinet (DPC) is the state government agency responsible for the administration, management and regulation of South Australia’s mineral resources industry. To achieve this, DPC is responsible for administering the state’s exploration and mining legislation on behalf of the Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy. This legislation governs the access to land for, and regulation of, exploration and production activities for mineral and quarrying resources in South Australia. This report summarises the regulatory activities of DPC and the regulatory performance of the South Australian mineral resources industry in 2016. It covers all assessment and compliance-related activities related to South Australia’s mineral exploration and metallic, uranium, industrial, extractive and precious stone mining operations. Key information provided includes: - mineral tenements statistics for 2016 - summary assessments of applications, including lease, licence and program approvals in 2016 - compliance-related statistics, including number of inspections, complaints and incidents in 2016 - summary of enforcement actions issued by DPC in 2016 - DPC’s commitment to community engagement - overview and status of the Extractives Areas Rehabilitation Fund - summary of the administration and compliance activities in South Australia’s opal fields in 2016 - summary of resource royalties compliance in 2016 - summary of regulatory initiatives by DPC for 2016. The report aligns with the regulatory principles set out in DPC’s Regulating mineral exploration and mining in South Australia: setting the framework for best practice regulation. The report is intended to satisfy key features of DPC’s regulatory framework by providing transparency of its regulatory services to the South Australian mineral resources industry, landowners, community and other stakeholders. DPC expects that this report (and past and future reports) will contribute to providing community confidence and trust in the regulator, the industry’s overall performance and a demonstrated commitment by exploration and mining companies to best practice environmental management.
