REPORT FOR DWLBC - This project is structured to address the issues which confront the proponents when considering injection of reclaimed water that is of a quality less than drinking standard. The project incorporates best practice from around the world where aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) of treated wastewaters has been applied. To this end the project will address issues concerned with well bore clogging, suspended solids, fate of pathogens and microbiota, interaction of chemical species with aquifer matrix material, and aquifer hydraulics. This report documents the drilling of the production/injection well, recovery of cores from across selected intervals of the aquifer, geophysical logging, a step drawdown pumping test to determine the transmissivity of the aquifer, and chemical analysis of the ambient groundwater quality. From the results of the drilling and geophysical logging it is inferred that the aquifer is relatively homogeneous over the entire penetrated thickness. Although there are subtle differences in lithology that can be discerned from the geophysical logs, these are generally related to the degree of cementation, clay content and amount of shell debris present within the matrix. The production of formation material may potentially impact on the quality of water recovered during early ASR cycles of injection and recovery; however, it is expected that this problem will be overcome after several injection/recovery cycles.
