A survey of analyses of Adelaide Sub-basin groundwater has shown that the removal of calcium and magnesium bicarbonates would give a 'soft' product water containing 500-700 ppm TDS, mainly sodium chloride. Trial operation of a continuous ion exchange plant at Amdel has shown that this operation is possible, and has provided operating data for cost estimating purposes. Using actual operating data, and capital cost information provided by William Boby (Australia) Pty Ltd, the installed cost of a plant to produce 1 million gallons/day of dealkalized water from the Adelaide Plains Tertiary aquifer is estimated to be $12,000. The cost of product waters is estimated to be 9.5 cents/1000 gallons for continuous operation, or 14.1 cents/1000 gallons for operation during the climatically drier five months of each year.
