As part of regional exploration for possible economic sedimentary uranium deposits which might have formed along the northern margin of the Murray Basin, adjacent to a probable exposed basement source area at Radium Hill, a 12 hole, 1337 m open-hole drilling programme was designed to evaluate the favourable Tertiary marginal marine sand units which are known to exist in the area to the south, as possible hosts for sandstone type uranium mineralisation. Drilling took place in June 1980, and the best mineralised intercept was 0.7 m of 0.073% U3O8, encountered in hole WE2 at 102.2 m depth. It appears that the mineralisation is generally associated with reduced pyritic clay zones in ?regressive paralic sediments lying above and adjacent to the Miocene littoral sand section.
