In a search for possible hydrothermal gold or porphyry - type base metal deposits, Utah undertook 'grass-roots' geochemical exploration over a large area of the Gawler Ranges surrounding Clucas Hill, approximately 50 km south-southeast of Kingoonya. 17 sampling traverses spaced about 1 km apart and totalling 42 line km were laid out, and 795 rock chip and 30 stream sediment samples of three mapped volcanic units were taken for analysis. The traversing failed to disclose any visible mineralisation in the volcanic rocks, even at the contacts with Hiltaba Suite granites. Minor tungsten, tin and arsenic anomalism was found, all within the Lake Gairdner Rhyolite, which may indicate vein mineralisation emanating from shallowly buried Hiltaba plutons. However, the overall geochemical results were seen as not providing sufficient encouragement for a continuation of exploration.
