Following the September 1972 signing of an exploration joint venture agreement for SML 686 between Minad-Teton Australia and Afmeco, the latter company undertook an appraisal rotary drilling programme (26 holes, total 15,170 feet) on areas of the licence where limited sedimentary uranium mineralisation had previously been identified. Several of these new holes encountered zones of anomalously high radioactivity within the target Tertiary sequence. Ongoing drilling and some coring is recommended over the more prospective north-eastern portion of the licence area, to more closely define the ore-bearing strata and to substantiate by chemical analysis the log-indicated grades of mineralisation.
