In follow-up evaluation of a sedimentary uranium discovery made on the preceding EL 203 in two previously drilled exploratory open rotary holes, 203-1 and 203-2, which encountered downhole radiometric log indications of uranium mineralisation producing radiation levels of up to 20 x background, another two infill holes totalling 442 m of penetration were drilled 1 km apart along the same drill traverse in the vicinity of these earlier holes. This work showed that there is some lateral continuity of the mineralisation at around the 160 m depth level (between 0.01% and 0.027% U3O8 equivalent over a 0.2 m interval), but it clearly does not develop into an economic thickness or grade. Although an appropriate geological environment for the accumulation of sedimentary uranium appears to exist in this area, its formation has not occurred, other than sparsely, perhaps because of one or a number of stated possible reasons. In view of this disappointment in not locating a large uranium orebody, despite having conducted what it felt was an adequate amount of widespread reconnaissance drilling, BP Minerals decided to relinquish their 25% joint venture interest in the Poontana Project, and the remaining partners then chose to let tenure of the ground lapse.
