The potential for economic stratiform copper deposits hosted within the clastic lower inter-glacial sequence of the Umberatana Group Neoproterozoic sedimentary succession was explored over an area situated immediately east and south-east of Leigh Creek by carrying out 1:5000 scale geological mapping, ground geophysical surveys over aeromagnetic and regional gravity anomalies, reconnaissance soil sampling, and limited diamond drilling (4 holes for an aggregate cored penetration of 1494.3 m, put down in the vicinity of the abandoned Mountain-of-Light copper workings). Although hole MD002 encountered 9 m of supergene-enriched copper mineralisation grading an average 0.54% Cu in a deeply weathered shear zone below 181 m depth, the primary ore zone was not reached and the target thus could not be evaluated. Inclined drillholes MD003 and MD004 both intersected basic igneous basalt/dolerite sills interbedded in purple, micaceous haematite-rich shales at around 470 m depth, which probably serve to explain the 4 square km extent of geophysical anomalies. Prior to the drilling, two orthogonal, 2 km long gravity traverses of 81 stations at 50 m intervals had been read, which revealed local gravity highs to 1 mGal in the Mountain-of-Light locality which coincide with a magnetic high. Grid-based soil sampling carried out over other old copper and gold workings lying some distance to the north at Boolooroo (445 samples), in a possibly similar geological setting to the Mountain-of-Light area, defined a broad anomalous zone of about 1 square km with > 100 ppm Cu (maximum 620 ppm), but the accompanying gold assay values were very low (max. 3 ppm Au).
