TARGET: An assessment of the potential for uranium and lignite deposits within the Eocene Pidinga Formation, and separate investigations of coincident, possible Olympic Dam target type magnetic and gravity anomalies in the crystalline Precambrian basement rocks, were undertaken over an area 30 km north-northwest of Yalata Mission. EXPLORATION: Aeromagnetic and regional helicopter-borne gravity surveys were undertaken, plus grid-based detailed ground magnetic and IP surveys, and open hole rotary percussion drilling (13 vertical holes totalling 1971.5 m). RESULTS: Minor beds of high ash and sulphur content Tertiary lignite up to 6 m thick, restricted to deep troughs, were intersected in 5 holes. Narrow intersections of disseminated and semi-massive, marcasite-rich but Cu-Pb poor sulphides were found in holes TW4 and TW10, in chloritic sheared basement (?para-)gneisses, at shallow depth. Carpentaria has attributed the irregular development of up to 50% sulphides containing elevated base metal values, which appear to occur at, or near, the base of the oxidised layer, to supergene processes that have no economic significance.
