Exploration for possible economic Zambian Copperbelt - type stratabound copper deposits which may have formed within the northern Willouran Ranges has consisted of the acquisition of 1:25,000 scale aerial photographs, the conduct of limited regional geological mapping, and making some local detailed investigations of surface mineralisation styles, including petrographic studies made on 43 selected outcrop samples. This work identified a 12 square km prospective area containing mineralised zones up to 20 m wide, that have formed within transgressive onlapping early Adelaidean shallow marine sedimentary sequences in the Callanna, Burra and lower Umberatana groups. Disseminated copper sulphides (pyrite plus lesser chalcopyrite) occur in marbles, impure dolomites, dolomitic siltstones and sandstones with carbonate matrix, but only very little secondary copper staining is associated with this mineralisation. Assaying of rock chip samples taken from the more promising occurrences, principally those found near the historically worked secondary copper showings, returned values of up to 6.4% Cu, but in general the mineralisation tenor appeared weak, and Dampier Mining concluded that it did not represent a target warranting further work, although the company intends to continue its copper search elsewhere within the Flinders Ranges. An estimated best localised concentration of copper mineralisation present on the licence area is approximately 100,000 tons of 1.4% Cu existing within oxidised horizons at the Breadon Hill prospect.
