Exploration directed at locating possible shallow Tertiary lignite resources within the Eocene Knight Group of the Murray Basin was undertaken over an area extending adjacent to the SA/Vic state border, north and east of Naracoorte. Drilling of 16 rotary percussion vertical open holes totalling 1678.2 m in two campaigns during June 1981 and March 1982 failed to disclose any significant seams of brown coal in the Mundulla, Padthaway or Hynam districts. The top of the target Knight Group sedimentary sequence was encountered at depths ranging between 80 m and 131 m. Five holes were drilled through into basement without intersecting any Knight Group sediments. CSR concluded that the subject area has low potential for finding shallow lignite occurrences that are amenable to mining, and decided to allow licence tenure to lapse at expiry.
