Over an area of small salinas located approximately 100 km south-west of Tarcoola, near the margin of the Gawler Block outcrop, 6 rotary air/mud holes totalling 231 m (part of a planned programme of 16 holes) were drilled to basement to test for coal within a possible fault-bounded Tertiary basin indicated by topographic, aeromagnetic and regional gravity data. No coal was found, although some Tertiary floodplain sediments were intersected, extending down to 50 m depth in holes NR3 and NR4 sited near the centre of the salt lake depression. Difficulties connected with drill rig physical access and weather conditions, plus, latterly, redirected company priorities, caused the abandonment of the remainder of the drilling programme.
