In a search for base metals on northern Kangaroo Island, the licensee investigated an untested regional magnetic anomaly in the Middle River area, following the assumption that Kanmantoo type stratiform mineralisation would give a distinctive magnetic signature. A detailed, 36.5 line km ground magnetic survey was conducted on closely spaced traverses, which indicated one or more magnetic horizons having variable intensity and remnant magnetization, the maximum intensity being in the order of 300 nT. Auger soil sampling (660 samples) and rock chip sampling (137 samples), plus geological mapping of the target Talisker Calc-siltstone Member, failed to identify significant base metal mineralisation associated with Cambrian pyrite / pyrrhotite / magnetite - rich shales. In the vicinity of two intense magnetic anomalies at Middle River, inspection of exposures of fresh bedrock in the bed of the river disclosed two 6-20 m thick, oxidised, formerly sulphide-bearing horizons that yielded non-coincident best assay values of 650 ppm Pb and 270 ppm Zn. At the Maylands property, follow-up to regional geochemical anomalies associated with a 300 nT magnetic peak yielded marginally anomalous base metal values, 220-940 ppm Pb and 130-220 ppm Zn associated with dark grey shales.
