During a search for possible diamondiferous rocks within an area lying to the north of William Creek and abutting the south-eastern side of the Peake and Denison Ranges, stream sediment sampling and a low level, 5300 line km aeromagnetic / radiometric survey provided several anomalies considered to have potential for arising from kimberlitic sources. 60.8 line km of ground magnetic traverses were carried out at selected sites, as well as auger drilling to provide bedrock samples suitable for geochemical trace metal analysis. Eight percussion drillholes totalling 870 m were completed to test seven targets, with four holes encountering basic extrusive Cadlareena Volcanics, and four terminating in Adelaidean or Cretaceous sediments. No kimberlites were found, and downhole sample checks for kimberlite indicators gave negative results. Trace native copper mineralisation was intersected over the depth intervals 50-64 m and 80-88 m in the volcanic unit penetrated in drillhole 81RHP1, with downhole sample assays returning a maximum value of 480 ppm Cu. It was concluded that the surface kimberlitic mineralogical anomalies are derived from transported material, and that the coincident magnetic/geochemical anomalies are due to the presence of buried basic volcanics containing a magnetite-rich horizon. A full suite of geophysical wireline logs were run to total depth in three of the open drillholes, which were those where the logging tools would pass through. Four samples of fresh Bulldog Shale submitted for oil shale pyrolysis all gave oil yields of under 5 litres/tonne.
