While looking for possible westward extensions to the Eurelia Kimberlite Province, Stockdale's stream gravel sampling for kimberlitic indicators, followed by ground magnetometer traversing and observation of vegetation anomalies, led to the discovery of the K9 kimberlite dyke in the hills south-west of Carrieton. A 30 tonne bulk sample of this dyke was examined and a 0.0065 ct microdiamond was recovered, of a type correlating with diamonds contained in kimberlites K1, K2 and K3 of the Eurelia swarm which are on strike trend with K9. Large 90-100 cu. m bulk samples of the adjacent creek sediments were also examined for any heavy mineral dispersal from the K9 dyke or from probable undiscovered nearby kimberlites. It was concluded that the degree of dispersal, particularly of heavy minerals sourced from the Eurelia swarm, was very low, and therefore the diamond potential is decreased. Interpretation of an aeromagnetic survey flown over the licence area in 1979 identified two anomalies near Pekina Creek showing possible kimberlitic source affinity. After studying the results of geochemical sampling along Pekina Creek, it was decided that deposits of economic value are unlikely to be detected by drilling these magnetic anomalies.
