Continuing exploration for possible buried Mount Gunson and Olympic Dam type copper deposits, or other stratabound base metal occurrences within shelfal facies of Adelaidean sediments or in the pre-Adelaidean Wandearah Formation Carpentarian age metasediments that subcrop over an area extending southwards from Port Germein to the Broughton River delta, has centred on evaluation of coincident aeromagnetic / gravity anomalies, including a number generated from new ground magnetic and gravity traverses. Diamond drilling (4 holes in this period : thus making overall 20 holes totalling 9208.45 m) has, however, encountered only traces of galena and weak, disseminated copper sulphide mineralisation in the lower Sturtian interval rocks. The strong combined magnetic/gravity high at Wandearah West was shown to arise from a structural uplift in the Carpentarian basement, it having within it a pronounced haematitic iron enrichment in the metasiltstones drilled, to the extent that they can essentially be regarded as iron formations. Following the licence farm-in of Aquitaine Minerals in June 1979, additional drill targets were sought by acquiring detailed ground magnetic and gravity surveys. A 1.7 mGal residual gravity anomaly centred 4 km north-west of Port Germein was investigated by DDH PP20, after a 29-station gravity appraisal on a 400 m x 400 m grid had been completed to define its closure. The drillhole was terminated at a total depth of 356 m in Adelaidean Brachina Formation shales and siltstones containing minor chalcopyrite, without finding any obvious explanation for the gravity anomaly. 5 auger and air-drilled percussion holes totalling 226 m were put down near the south-eastern corner of the licence area to search for economic Tertiary lignite, thin seams of which had earlier been disclosed by DDH PP6, but this drilling too had no success.
