Coal exploration performed by CRA in the eastern part of the Mulgathing Trough comprised a literature review, stratigraphic interpretation of previous drillhole and geophysical data, and the planning of a 6-hole rotary exploratory drilling programme which never came to fruition. Diamond exploration activities consisted of drainage sampling for mineralogical and geochemical indicators of undiscovered kimberlites, but this gave negative results. Three ground magnetic traverses also failed to recover a coherent 3500 gamma aeromagnetic anomaly that was identified in 1970 by Kennecott Explorations in the Gibraltar Rocks area, which on initial appearances might have been indicative of buried Olympic Dam style base metal mineralisation.
