Interpretation of available SADME/BMR airborne magnetic survey data, and subsequent ground magnetic and gravity surveys to define five targets, were conducted in the area between Watson Siding and Ooldea, prior to drilling two rotary percussion holes aggregating 592 m in a search for gold and base metals within inferred older Proterozoic basement rocks that underlie possible Upper Proterozoic, as well as Cambrian and Tertiary to Recent, sedimentary cover. The target geophysical anomalies were two discrete, coincident strong magnetic and gravity features modelled as representing linear iron formation structures in the basement. Both of the drillholes encountered unusual, very high pressure and high temperature regional metamorphosed upper amphibolite to granulite facies composite gneisses of probable sedimentary origin, which contain elements of probable banded iron formation protoliths. No mineralisation of any note was seen, and the observed geophysical anomalies were adequately explained by the measured rock properties. The western sector of the licence, where depths to basement are greater, has now been relinquished by Amoco prior to their resuming tenure under a new licence number.
