In a search for possible economic Tertiary sediment-hosted uranium deposits in an area lying just to the east of Lake Frome, a reconnaissance open hole rotary drilling and geophysical logging programme was undertaken (84 holes totalling 9625 m, put down at approximate 1 mile intervals along re-graded station tracks). The drilling did not locate significant uranium mineralisation, although low order gamma log readings greater than four times background were obtained in 5 holes. Good indications of sand body development and reducing conditions were recognised within the target Eocene Eyre Formation, while probable stratigraphically-trapped small uranium precipitate occurrences were noted from two separate areas of, and potentially at three different depth zones within, the non-target Miocene-Pliocene "Lakeside Beds" sequence, being described by the correlation of lithologic and petrophysical facies. A highest gamma logged radioactivity peak of 187 counts per second (6 x background) was recorded at 23.2 m depth in hole LE42, corresponding to a grey-blue silty clay interbed containing gypsum, minor carbonaceous material and small pyritic nodules. Grab samples taken from this stratum assayed up to 35 ppm U only. Closer-spaced drilling was recommended in the south-eastern section areas of interest for potential redox cell development.
