A re-investigation of base metal geochemical anomalies detected during Electrolytic Zinc Co.'s former stream sediment and rock chip sampling programme conducted near an historic copper-lead mine prospect at Mount Chambers in the eastern Flinders Ranges, which work has included closer spaced detailed surface geochemical sampling and 1:1200 scale geological mapping on a gridded area of 3000 x 2000 feet, has indicated two main anomalous zones for copper, lead and zinc that appear to transect the boundaries of local rock types, and thus may indicate that the source mineralisation is hydrothermal or remobilised syngenetic in origin. The separate highest lead values of 3500 and 2500 ppm Pb, with their associated high copper and zinc, appear related to a combination of bedding, folding and faulting developed in the south-eastern part of the mapped area. Three traverses of drillholes were recommended to test these anomalies to target depths of about 350 feet. Wet weather experienced during early 1974 delayed the planned drilling until July of that year, when 18 vertical percussion holes with a total penetration of 4780 feet were completed in rocks belonging to the middle section of the Lower Cambrian limestone/dolomite sequence. No significant mineralisation was encountered, only traces of pyrite and chalcopyrite from around 170 and 240 feet depth, corresponding to dark brownish red dolomitic clay and manganiferous limestone intervals. It was found impossible to correlate the subsurface geology with the surface detailed mapping. In view of the downgraded potential of the prospect, the licence was surrendered.
