TARGET: Lower Permian coal of steaming or coking grade, suitable for open cut development. EXPLORATION: Rotary drilling of 42 open and partly cored holes totalling 5122 m, including 105 m of coring, with follow-up geophysical logging. RESULTS: 7 drillholes were successful in intersecting, in three areas, high moisture and sulphur but low ash content, sub-bituminous rank coal seams ranging from 0.3 to 1.5 m thick, below an overburden thickness varying from 45-120 m. The coal-bearing parts of the licences covered 102, 52 and 31 square km respectively. In the two main, more northerly areas of coal occurrence (A and B), the identified resource is approximately 146,500,000 tonnes-in-place. The coal is non-swelling, and has a high specific energy of around 24 MJ/kg (10,315 British thermal units per lb) measured on an as-received basis.
