Appraisal of a newly discovered large deposit of kaolin, found in the near surface regolith to Archaean basement on two farms situated 7 km south of Mount Hope on southern Eyre Peninsula, has consisted of further air/rotary drilling (35 holes, total 612 m) to help define the deposit, plus extensive overseas laboratory tests of bulk sampled material to assess its suitability for use as coating and filler clays in paper manufacture, relative to existing sources. An estimate of the raw kaolin resource has now been compiled, giving a figure of an indicated 12,260,000 tonnes of white kaolin having an average bed thickness of 14 m or more, and consisting of roughly 74% filler quality and 26% coating quality material. Research is continuing into the technical and economic aspects of mineral processing, proposed open pit mine and processing plant design, and market penetration, through the assistance of a number of German industrial firms having expertise in this product.
