As a part of continuing exploration for possible economic buried epithermal / hydrothermal / metasomatic and skarn-related base metal and gold deposits undertaken within an area of shallow Lower Proterozoic basement located approximately 30 miles west of Kingoonya, selected geochemically anomalous areas on the Kenella Rocks prospect grid were investigated by carrying out experimental IP, SP and electrical resistivity traverses, but these survey techniques proved to be unsuccessful owing to the generally saline land surface environment, coupled with the then unusually prevalent rainfall, plus the presence of a substantial graphite content in many of the basement rocks. Therefore it was decided to proceed next with a programme of rotary percussion / BQ diamond core drilling, to test previously identified significant base metal soil anomalies and magnetic/EM anomalies inferred to lie in prospective structural locations. During July-October 1973, 8 inclined holes and 1 vertical hole were drilled for a total penetration of 3109 ft (including 1671 feet of coring). The best mineralised intercept was obtained from Kenella hole 1A, which had been put down on a postulated NE-SW trending fault zone passing immediately west of the Kenella Rocks gneiss outcrop. Highly sheared and broken ground was encountered carrying between 1% and 2.1% Zn, plus up to 1100 ppm Pb and 400 ppm Cu, over the depth interval 460-490 feet near the bottom of the hole. An attempt, made in hole 7A, to drill near this hole so as to penetrate deeper into the mineralised section of the fault, had to be abandoned at 317 feet owing to drilling difficulties. It was tentatively concluded that no economic concentration of base metals was present in the overall drilled area. No field work was conducted during the second licence year. Plans were made for a follow-up drilling programme to evaluate the Kenella 1A mineralisation, and efforts commenced to try to secure a joint venture partner, but a poor response to the latter, in view of the mining industry's uncertainties concerning government policy towards mineral exploration, prompted an eventual decision to allow licence tenure to lapse.
