In ongoing exploration of the base metal potential of a small licence area located 34 km west of Kingscote, 5 inclined shallow diamond drillholes totalling 399 m were put down on significant anomalies located by IP surveys and/or geochemical soil sampling (which had disclosed up to 3000 ppm Pb over >100 m strike lengths). Subsequent analyses of recovered drill core samples established the presence of subeconomic lead-zinc mineralisation within Early Cambrian metasediments at the Dewrang prospect. Petrological examination of these rocks showed two modes of metallic sulphide occurrence: (1) marcasite-rich, semi-continuous partings and disseminations, the latter closely reflecting bedding; (2) sphalerite- and galena-rich microfracture fillings sometimes, but not invariably, accompanied by low temperature hydrothermal minerals. The southern part of the prospect is very deeply weathered, to at least 40 m depth, with ferruginised and cavernous quartz lenses common.
