Exploration for possible sedimentary uranium deposits of Lake Frome type hosted within anticipated buried Quaternary, Tertiary or Jurassic palaeochannels in the Mount Distance area, 60 km east-northeast of Lyndhurst, has included reconnaissance and semi-detailed carborne radiometric surveying (970 + 200 line miles along tracks), groundwater sampling in water bores, and its analysis for dissolved uranium, and two campaigns of rotary-percussion drilling to reach pre-Mesozoic bedrock, performed in July and December 1972. The ground radiometrics found only two weak anomalies on the eastern bank of Yerelina Creek, near Nobs Well. The first round of drilling (24 holes totalling 5870 feet) gave a regional coverage of the licence area, to define the local stratigraphy and prospect for any palaeochannel sediment facies. From downhole radiometric logging, seven holes had weak uranium count anomalies (> three times background), including an anomaly peaking at up to 7 x background in hole MD9 over the Quaternary section. In the second drilling phase, which concentrated on the area of surface radiometric anomalism near Nobs Well, with 16 holes spaced about 2.5 km apart (total drilled 6165 feet), four of the holes gave weak subsurface radiometric anomalies (to 2-4 x background, maximum reading 10,000 counts per minute) from a ?Jurassic granule conglomerate lying directly above the unconformity at the base of the Mesozoic interval. The anomalies were recorded in adjacent drillholes, and define a north-northwest trending zone of anomalous radioactivity. This potential palaeochannel uranium accumulation will be evaluated with further, closer (1.5 km) spaced drilling upon renewal of the licence tenure.
