Airborne and ground magnetic surveys were conducted in the Bundulla area of the Nullarbor Plain (SA), prior to drilling a prominent circular aeromagnetic feature. 2 percussion/rotary mud holes, each drilled to TD 369.5 m, penetrated crystalline basement, which proved to be tholeiitic dolerite, at depths of 300 and 280 m respectively. The cover sequence consists of Tertiary karstic limestones and Cretaceous silts, sands and carbonaceous shaley mudstones. Results of rock sample analyses for shale oil, uranium and various metal contents all came back as insignificant, although visible, much disseminated tiny native copper blebs were found in core and cuttings samples of the dolerite intrusive. Under an option to take up a joint venture, BHP Minerals in mid-1982 deepened drillhole BN2 to new TD 482.8 m by diamond coring, to look for a deeper source for the strong magnetic anomalism, but no other basement rock type or evident mineralisation was encountered.
