Scout drilling of gravity low anomalies in the eastern half of the buried Permian Wallira Trough (11 rotary mud holes totalling 1135 m), in a search for possible economic Upper Permian coal seams which might extend westward from those discovered in the Lake Phillipson region, encountered only thin and sparse ?Cretaceous lignitic beds, less than 2 m thick, within a broader carbonaceous shale interval present from about 66 m to 105 m depth, depending on the drillhole location. Only one hole in the south of the licence area penetrated shallow Pre-Palaeozoic basement (biotite schist). None of the holes were able to be geophysically logged, so the coal-related information gained is incomplete, but is regarded as not encouraging for further work. Ground-based geological reconnaissance, and scintillometric total count logging of all drill cuttings, were also performed, but no mineralised outcrops or downhole sediment radiometric anomalies of significance were noted. Assaying of selected drillhole samples for possible sedimentary gold or uranium yielded disappointing results.
