Exploration for possible subsurface epithermal / hydrothermal, vein - style gold and base metal mineralisation in the vicinity of historic mines on the Houghton Inlier has consisted of the acquisition and interpretation of an initial semi-detailed aeromagnetic/radiometric survey, plus limited drilling to probe below old mine workings. At the Stockyard Gully prospect, near the abandoned Para Wirra and Mount Gawler gold mines' main shafts, 3 inclined diamond holes totalling 1610 feet (including 380 feet of percussion precollars) were drilled into inferred depth extensions of historically worked gold/copper lodes. All of the drillholes successfully intersected highly altered, sulphide-bearing basement gneissic granodiorite and pegmatitic lode rocks carrying up to 2% Cu and 10 dwts/ton (approx. 17 ppm) Au over narrow intervals at varying depths far below the bottom limits of the old workings. The lode shear structures and ore mineral textures appear to imply a strong hydrothermal and partly pneumatolytic origin for the metallic mineralisation, which was introduced within a highly retrograde metamorphic system. The magnetite-rich ore commonly comprises a mixture of pyrite - chalcopyrite - bornite - specularite - wittichenite, occurring in a gangue of sericite - chlorite - tourmaline - apatite - calcite - haematite - sillimanite and garnet within highly sheared quartz veins. An aeromagnetic data interpretation provided by the licensee's geophysical consultants suggests the presence of several buried intrusive igneous bodies in this district.
