Ongoing exploration for economic sedimentary uranium deposits in the Lake Callabonna region involved further reconnaissance rotary mud drilling and well geophysical logging (9 holes, total 3195 feet) to evaluate radiometric anomalies found in drillholes LC2 and LC7 during the previous year. The target sand unit proved to be un-oxidised, poorly developed and discontinuous, with only patchy radioactivity. Further drilling investigations of this Lower Tertiary interval thus do not appear to be warranted, especially in view of the absence of a clear model for mineralisation in this area. It was observed that the overall Tertiary sequence found east of Moolawatana Homestead has a consistent dip to the west. This observation leads to the conclusion that the western edge of the seismically mapped Poontana basinal structure may be a fault line rather than a depositional edge, which supports the view that much of the uplift to the northern Flinders Ranges is very recent - possibly Pleistocene.
