During June-July 1972, 35 shallow vertical rotary percussion drillholes for a total penetration of 877 m were completed within the Ediacara Fault Zone to test for economic base metal mineralisation, the majority of the holes being sited at locations roughly 1500 m apart, except for 7 holes put down close together in the Black Eagle mine area. A small surface malachite-?chalcocite occurrence noted within the Wonoka Formation siltstones 2.8 km east of Warioota Outstation was drilled with two of the percussion holes, and 18 stream sediment and 11 rock chip samples taken in the vicinity were assayed. The surface and drillhole assay data are presented in tables and on cross-sections, but have not yet been interpreted. Barite veins and lenses that occur throughout the licence area, which are probably genetically related to the Ediacara Fault, were sampled and assayed for lead to determine if a zonal pattern of lead content in the barite exists, arranged either towards or along this fault. No such geochemical zonation was apparent outside of the Ediacara mines area, but the six samples taken there are consistently high in lead (to 800 ppm Pb in the barite lens lying adjacent to the Gap Creek Fault splay), which it is thought may be due either to the faulting or to the locally high lead background levels in the host Cambrian dolomites.
