Diamond drillhole WC1 was drilled by Marathon to a total depth of 173.5 m over the Woolatchi Creek aeromagnetic anomaly, as part of an ongoing search for uranium and base metals in the north-eastern Flinders Ranges and Lake Frome Plains region. Assaying of the drill core indicated that there are notably anomalous molybdenum values, in association with abundant pyrite and lesser pyrrhotite, marcasite and chalcopyrite, within buried Wattleowie-type granite basement. As the drill core magnetic susceptibility readings were increasing down hole, it appeared that the hole may not have reached the target zone, a conclusion supported by the results of follow-up geophysical modelling and drill core petrological studies. Subsequently, spectral IP and resistivity readings made along traverses crossing the aeromagnetic anomaly located a conductive anomaly in concealed basement near DDH WC1, possibly related to minor vein-type pyrite and chalcopyrite mineralisation which was later observed at the surface in quartzo-feldspathic migmatitic gneisses.
