Exploration activities have included reconnaissance (1:20,000 scale) and detailed (1:1000 scale) geological mapping, limited surface rock chip sampling (9 samples), and the excavation of 31 costeans to expose for examination more than 580 linear m of bedrock stratabound gold mineralisation of the Telfer type, occurring in arkosic tillite and quartzite beds of the Neoproterozoic Appila Tillite. The geochemical sampling results from 56 samples taken from these trenches were disappointing, with no notable gold anomalism and no coherent pathfinder element associations, but it was decided that the southern portion of the Mount Grainger line of historic workings, and possible northern extensions to the goldfield occurring around the nose of the Mount Grainger anticline, will be retained under two mining leases and investigated by bulk sampling below the level of surface leaching. The Aureous line of workings in the Tarcowie Siltstone, the Dustholes line of workings put down along faults crossing the Gumbowie Arkose Member of the Pepuarta Tillite, small workings made in the Tindelpina Shale Member of the Tapley Hill Formation north of Mount Grainger, small workings to the south of the Mount Grainger goldfield in ?Tertiary gravels and colluvial to alluvial deposits, and the old Medora South workings, were also investigated and ideas were formulated as to their various gold emplacement origins.
