Exploration for possible economic primary and secondary uranium deposits, within an area extending for 50 miles north-westwards from Cockburn and Mingary, has consisted of the first-time (for this locality) acquisition by the licence operator of an aerial gamma ray spectroscopy survey, followed by ground checking of anomalies and the assaying of potential uranium source rocks and nearby groundwater. In the north of the licence, airborne Bi214 sensor (= uranium) anomalies are centred over outcropping and subcropping Early Proterozoic metasediments. The level of gamma radiation is normal, and the above anomalies only appear pronounced in relation to the lower radiation of the surrounding surficial alluvium. In the south, most Bi214 anomalies are centered over small intrusive granites, which contain between 9 and 19 ppm U3O8 on average. Three airborne anomalies, KN/3, KN/6 and KN/21, require further work. KN/6 is situated over subcropping chiastolite schist. KN/3 and KN/21 are low order Bi214 anomalies centred over Oonartra Creek, where groundwater sampling has returned high U values, pointing to a potential for sandstone-type U occurrences within porous Cainozoic sediments of the Mulyungarie Basin.
