Exploration was carried out 50 km east of Port Augusta to try to locate possible concealed Triassic coal-bearing basins similar to the nearby Boolcunda and Springfield basins, and to assess the potential for economic Cainozoic lignite occurrences. Work included an evaluation of previous exploration data, interpretation of available geophysical survey results and Landsat imagery, and the conduct of a resistivity sounding survey of the basement topography in the eventual target area, the Willochra Basin. It was inferred that the gravity lows observed within the Willochra Basin are probably due to Adelaidean diapiric structures; past water well drilling records show that one significant lignite stratum is present in the southern part of this basin, but it lies at 150 m or more depth. The results of the new resistivity survey, when integrated with revised geophysical and geological interpretations, indicate that a possible economic younger ligneous horizon is developed to the south of the Wilmington - Willowie Road, also in the south of the basin, at depths greater than 70 m. The basement structure in this part of the basin is complex, consisting of at least 2 horsts and 3 grabens. It was concluded that the location of these structures has greatly reduced the possibility of the ligneous horizon onlapping inferred shallowing Proterozoic basement along the south-eastern margin of the basin, thus rendering remote any prospect here of CSR being able to locate open cut mineable large tonnages of lignite.
