WMC's Stuart Shelf exploration activities from 1975 to 1985 have sought mainly Olympic Dam style mineralisation (copper - uranium - precious metals in haematitic breccia host rocks), with lesser emphasis directed at: possible distal analogues of the Olympic Dam orebody, volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, unconformity - related uranium vein deposits, discrete gold - only mineralisation, and stratiform copper mineralisation within the Adelaidean cover sequence. To address the primary aim, coincident magnetic and gravity anomalies were defined and gridded, and drill target selections were based on intersecting the source of the gravity anomaly. To illustrate the types of magnetic and radiometric features that have been investigated, data from an airborne geophysical survey flown in 1979 are being released in full, even though the survey covers ground not yet relinquished. Exploratory work has included 3 phases of regional gravity surveys, trials of electrical prospecting techniques such as IP and magnetotelluric surveying, and the drilling of 21 diamond holes, of which 4 failed to intersect the basement, plus also the drilling of 2 percussion holes to test shallow-sourced features. All holes were geophysically logged, with some included formation temperature measurements, and the drill samples were subjected to detailed petrological and petrophysical assessments. Many occurrences of copper, silver, gold, uranium and rare earth mineralisation were intersected in metamorphosed, often dyke - cut, brecciated and recrystallised basement rocks. The basement geology is complex, and lithologies intersected range from granite gneiss to metasediments to iron formation to felsic volcanic rocks, volcanogenic sediments and granitoid rocks. Several of these lithologies show the advanced skarn - type alteration associated with many prospects lying within the retained area. Stratigraphic correlation is made between the Stuart Shelf rock units and the Eyre Peninsula area.
