As part of continuing exploration along the eastern Mount Lofty Ranges for economic stratabound base metal occurrences hosted within Kanmantoo Group metasediments, CRAE undertook regional soil and rock chip sampling to confirm the results of 1960s work carried out by the South Australian Mines Department, which had disclosed sub-economic Pb-Zn-Ag mineralisation at Mount Torrens and anomalous lead in an outcrop located approximately 1 km north of Harrogate. 1:50,000 scale geological mapping and detailed soil and rock chip sampling undertaken over geochemically base metal - anomalous pyritic schist units of the Cambrian Brukunga Formation, and follow-up percussion drilling (5 inclined holes totalling 486 m), have downgraded the prospectivity of the Harrogate lead prospect, with mineralised bedrock yielding a maximum assay value of 1840 ppm Pb over only a 2 m thick interval. In general, stratabound base metal values returned from drilling (ca. 100-500 ppm) were much lower than those of the corresponding surface soil and rock chip samples, a result attributed to the effects of strong supergene enrichment. However, interesting consecutive uranium intersections of 46 and 26 ppm U were obtained from the depth interval 88-92 m in hole 77HP1. Numerous soil geochemical anomalies delineated over a 7 km strike extent to the north of the Brukunga mine, including some spot uranium highs well above background, remain to be tested. A large, 3900 gamma aeromagnetic anomaly was identified at Bryces Creek, about 4 km south of Harrogate, and was rock chip and soil sampled, returning elevated Cu and Fe plus anomalous Sn and W from weakly gossanous mica schists associated with coarse-grained andalusite-mica schists and banded quartz-magnetite rocks. It was recommended that the Mines Exploration' 1971 airborne magnetic survey data be further studied to find more areas worthy of prospecting on the basis of their magnetic signature alone.
